The spirit of Mammon is not about money itself. It is about what quietly becomes your master.
Money is a tool, but for a lot of people it has quietly become a master. This message from the Breaking Free series names the thing the Bible calls Mammon — not money itself, but money treated as the thing that keeps you safe — and asks a blunt question: who are you actually loyal to?

Most of us were raised under the spirit of Mammon without noticing
The script goes like this, and everybody in the room can finish it. Get good grades, so you can get into a good college. Do well in college, so you can get a good job. Get a good job, so you can earn good money. So you can be… what, exactly?
Nobody sat you down and taught you that sequence. You absorbed it. And it is not that any single step is wrong — it is that the whole chain quietly points at security, and security is the promise Mammon makes and cannot keep.
God is not quiet on this subject
Prayer shows up in Scripture around 500 times. Faith, another 500 or so. Both are unmistakably central. Money and possessions come up far more often than either — which tells you it is not a side issue God tacked on at the end, and not a topic the church should get squeamish about.
Live, save, give — or give, save, live
Here is the practical hinge of the whole message. The world’s order is live, save, give: cover the lifestyle first, put something aside if there is anything left, and give from whatever survives. In practice that means giving is the thing that never happens.
God’s order is the exact reverse — give, save, live. Give first, save second, and build a life on what remains. It sounds like worse maths and it feels like more pressure, right up until the moment it is the only version that ever produces freedom.
The message also takes a hard look at consumer debt, and at how much of that industry is structured around the assumption that you will not finish paying. That is not a conspiracy theory; it is a business model worth understanding before you sign.
Where this lands
Breaking free from Mammon is not about taking a vow of poverty or feeling guilty about a paycheck. It is about demoting money from master back to tool, and the fastest way to do that is to give before you have decided you can afford to.
Keep going
If money is the thing keeping you up at night, start here: how to pray when you are anxious about provision, and verses for the weeks that feel heavy. If you want to work on it alongside other people rather than alone, a Connect Group is the place.
