You can be known at work, known at the gym, and known by hundreds online — and still not have one person who could actually help you rebuild your life. In this message from the Live a Better Story series, Pastor Brandon Sereg walks through Nehemiah’s rebuilding of Jerusalem’s wall to ask a harder question than who you know: who has access while you’re rebuilding? Not everyone who loves you is equipped to help you build, and the wrong access can bring the whole wall down.
Known By Everyone, Known By No One
Picture someone with 800 followers on social media and no one to call at 2 a.m. who would actually pick up. They’re in three group chats but can’t tell you about the last real conversation they had. Everybody knows their name — at work, at the gym, in the pickup line — but not one of those people actually knows who they are. Surrounded by many, known by none. Brandon asked the room a hard question: how many of you are that person? You don’t have to raise your hand. No one’s going to ask. No one’s going to out you. But maybe you already know.
Who Shouldn’t Be On Your Wall
Nehemiah rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem with ordinary people standing next to each other — and who builds next to you shapes what you build. Proverbs puts it plainly: the companion of fools suffers harm. That doesn’t mean the people around you are bad people. It means some of them aren’t equipped to build the section of wall you’re working on right now. They may love you. They may even be good people. But if you’re rebuilding your finances and getting advice from someone who’s never had a plan, or rebuilding a relationship pattern from someone whose last six relationships ended just like yours, you’re asking people who are stuck where they are to help you get somewhere they’ve never been. Stop asking for directions from people who haven’t made the trip.
Who Should Be On Your Wall
Here’s the encouraging part: for a lot of people, the right person is already trying to get your attention. Brandon pointed out that sometimes God doesn’t send someone new — the answer is already on your phone. That friend who keeps inviting you to coffee that you’re always too busy for. That Connect Group leader who keeps texting and checking in. Those are usually the right people, and the only thing missing is a reply. Who’s on your wall isn’t really a question about finding new people. It’s a question about who you’ll finally let in.
When Everyone Leaves, God Remains
Brandon pointed to Paul’s words in 2 Timothy 4:16-17 — written when Paul stood alone at his own defense, deserted by everyone who should have shown up for him. Paul doesn’t pray that they’d come back. He says, “May it not be held against them… but the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength.” The promise isn’t that everybody eventually returns. It’s that when everyone else leaves, God remains. That’s the floor underneath every wall you rebuild — even the ones you rebuild without the community you wish you had.
Building With the Right Community
Brandon shared a story from someone at Vibrant: a couple deep in debt who found freedom not through a program but through a person — a bank manager who’d already walked the path, sat down with them, laid out the numbers, and showed them financial freedom was possible. That relationship led them back to a church they’d visited once at an Easter egg hunt, and eventually to baptism. The point: when people say Vibrant, they’re not talking about the organization, they’re talking about the people — the ones who got in a group, got on a team, and stopped being occasional attenders. If you want to build something that lasts, you need to build with the right community.
Where This Lands
The ask this week is two questions, prayed honestly: who shouldn’t be allowed on my wall while I’m rebuilding, and who should? You don’t have to figure it out alone, and you don’t have to find brand-new people — the right ones may already be checking in on you. Ask God to show you both lists, and then actually reply to the person who keeps reaching out.
