For You Or Someone You Love
Nine passages about healing — and what each one actually promises.
Most people find this page holding a diagnosis. Yours, or somebody’s you love.
So let’s be honest before the verses start. The Bible contains real promises about healing, and it also contains people of enormous faith who stayed sick. Both are in there. Any page that gives you one and hides the other isn’t helping you — it’s setting you up.
What Scripture consistently promises is God’s presence, God’s compassion, and God’s power. It does not promise a timeline. Reading these with that clear-eyed is what lets them hold weight when you need them at 3am.
Read them slowly. Read them more than once.
Jeremiah 30:17 · NLT
“I will give you back your health and heal your wounds, says the Lord.”
God says this to a nation everyone else had written off as finished. The phrase right before it is people calling them an outcast nobody cares about. Healing here starts as a contradiction of what everyone assumes about you.
Psalm 103:2-3 · NLT
“Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me. He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases.”
Notice forgiveness and healing sit in the same sentence, from the same source. The psalmist isn’t ranking them. Both come from a God who is fundamentally disposed toward restoring you.
Isaiah 53:5 · NLT
“He was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed.”
The word for whole here is bigger than physical. It’s the healing of everything that’s broken between you and God, which is the wound underneath all the others. That one is settled and permanent.
James 5:14-15 · NLT
“Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you… and the prayer offered in faith will heal the sick.”
This is the most practical verse on this list, and most people skip the instruction in it. It doesn’t say pray alone. It says call people. Healing prayer in Scripture is almost always something that happens in a room with others.
Exodus 15:26 · NLT
“I am the Lord who heals you.”
Not the Lord who sometimes heals, or who healed once. A name. It’s who He is, whether or not you’re currently experiencing it.
Matthew 11:28 · NLT
“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”
Sometimes what needs healing isn’t in your body. Exhaustion is real, and Jesus names it as a category worth bringing to Him — not something to push through quietly.
Psalm 147:3 · NLT
“He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.”
Grief gets its own verse. If what’s broken is your heart rather than your body, that isn’t a lesser kind of wound in Scripture, and it isn’t treated as one.
2 Corinthians 12:8-9 · NLT
“Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.”
The honest one. Paul asked for healing and did not get it. This verse is in the Bible on purpose, so that people whose answer is no still have somewhere to stand. Unanswered doesn’t mean unheard.
Revelation 21:4 · NLT
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”
This is where every healing story finally lands. Some healing happens now. All of it happens eventually. That’s the promise no diagnosis can touch.
How to Pray These When You’re Scared
You don’t have to work up a feeling first. Some of the most honest prayers in Scripture are short and blunt — a leper who said if you are willing, you can heal me, a father who said I do believe, help my unbelief. Both got an answer.
Say the actual thing you want. Name the person. Then, like Jesus did in Gethsemane, hand God the outcome. That last part isn’t giving up. It’s the difference between faith and bargaining.
Asking boldly and trusting God with the answer are not opposites. Scripture does both, usually in the same breath.

Praying for healing is not a reason to stop treatment. Scripture never sets faith against medicine — Luke, who wrote two books of the New Testament, was a physician. Keep your appointments. Take what you’re prescribed. Talk to your doctor.
