How To Read The Bible

How To Read The Bible

You don’t have to be a Bible expert. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to start — and we’re here to help.

Why The Bible Matters

The Bible isn’t just an ancient book — it’s God’s love letter to you. It’s how He speaks, how He guides, and how He reveals who He is and who you’re created to be. Every page points to one story: that you are deeply loved, fully known, and invited into a better life with Jesus.

When you open the Bible, you’re not just reading words on a page. You’re stepping into a living conversation with the God who made you. Here’s what happens when you make it a daily rhythm:

01

You Hear God’s Voice

God still speaks today — and the Bible is the clearest way to hear Him. The more you read, the more you’ll recognize His voice in every season of life.

02

You Find Freedom

Truth sets you free. The Bible breaks the lies you’ve believed about yourself, your past, and your future — and replaces them with who God says you are.

03

You Discover Purpose

Your life has meaning. Scripture reveals the unique purpose God created you for and gives you the wisdom to walk it out — one step at a time.

04

You Grow Stronger

The Word builds your faith, renews your mind, and gives you what you need to face whatever life throws at you. It’s spiritual fuel for everyday living.

Where To Start

If you’ve ever cracked open the Bible and felt overwhelmed — you’re not alone. The Bible has 66 books, and starting in the wrong place (looking at you, Leviticus) can make anyone want to quit before they begin.

Here’s the simple plan we recommend at Vibrant: start with the Gospel of John. John was one of Jesus’ closest friends, and he wrote his account specifically so that people would come to believe in Jesus and experience real life through Him. It’s the perfect on-ramp.

After John, work your way through the other three Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) to get a full picture of who Jesus is, what He taught, and how He changes everything.

The S.O.A.P. Method

Reading the Bible is great. Engaging with the Bible is life-changing. The SOAP method is a simple, four-step way to slow down, hear from God, and actually apply what you read. All you need is a Bible, a notebook, and a few quiet minutes.

S

Scripture

Read the passage slowly. Then write down one or two verses that stand out to you — the words that grab your attention.

O

Observation

What’s happening in this passage? Who’s speaking? What’s the main idea? Write down what you notice in your own words.

A

Application

How does this apply to your life today? What’s one thing you can do, change, or believe differently because of what you read?

P

Prayer

Talk to God about it. Thank Him, ask Him for help, or simply respond to what He’s showing you. Keep it real and conversational.

Pick A Translation You’ll Actually Read

There are dozens of Bible translations out there, and the “best” one is the one you’ll actually open. If you’re new to the Bible — or just want something that reads clearly and naturally — we recommend the New Living Translation (NLT).

The NLT takes the original Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic texts and translates them into modern, everyday English. It’s accurate, easy to understand, and perfect for reading, studying, and sharing with others. You can grab a physical NLT Bible almost anywhere, or download it free on the YouVersion Bible app.
